J. Patrick Lannan was born in 1905 in Sterling, Illinois. At age 13, he worked as a bottle washer at a drug company. A self-educated scholar, he became an entrepreneur and financier.
During his lifetime, Lannan assembled an extensive collection of contemporary and modern American and European art. The Lannan Foundation was established with an endowment from his estate. Located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the foundation has dispersed the Lannan art collection to museums throughout the United States.
